How to Care for Handmade Ceramics

A clean handmade sand-colored ceramic plate by Kaya Ceramics seen from above in daylight

Whether handmade ceramics can go in the dishwasher depends on how they’re made, so the maker’s care instructions are what count. Kaya pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe, but never oven safe. What they don’t like is a sudden change in temperature, and a mild detergent with a soft sponge will keep the glaze looking new for years.

Quick answers

Kaya Ceramics
Dishwasher Yes
Microwave Yes
Oven No
Sudden temperature changes Avoid
Scouring pads and abrasive cleaners Avoid

This applies to all Kaya pieces unless the product page or care card says otherwise.

Are handmade ceramics dishwasher safe?

Not always. Clay, glaze and firing differ from one maker to the next, and some handmade pieces are meant for hand washing only, which is why it’s worth checking before the first wash.

Kaya’s pieces are fired at approx. 1250°C and go in the dishwasher. Load them so they don’t knock against each other during the cycle, and you’re done.

Can handmade ceramics go in the microwave?

Ours can. Every Kaya plate, bowl and mug is microwave safe, so you can warm up leftovers on a plate or heat soup straight in a Saint-Tropez Bowl, remembering that the ceramic itself gets hot and wants a careful hand.

Why not the oven?

Our ceramics are not made for oven use. Please don’t use them for baking or roasting, or to warm plates in the oven before dinner. The same goes for the stovetop, the grill and open flame.

Avoid thermal shock

Thermal shock happens when ceramic goes through a sharp change in temperature, and a hot dish rinsed straight under cold water is the classic example, where the sudden stress can crack a piece. Let hot dishes cool a little before you rinse them, and don’t pour boiling liquid into a mug that has just come out of the fridge.

Everyday cleaning

Use a soft sponge or brush with a mild dish soap, and leave the scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive powders in the cupboard, since they scratch the glaze and dull it over time.

Variation isn’t damage

No two pieces come out identical, because every one is shaped and painted by hand, so the color, the glaze and the brushstrokes vary a little from one to the next. That’s the piece rather than a defect, and colors can also look different on a screen than they do in your kitchen.

If something does arrive damaged, photograph the item and the packaging, keep the packaging aside, and email contact@kayaceramics.com within 48 hours of delivery with your order number. The full details are on our Shipping & Returns page.
